On Wednesday 9th October the STEM Wana team went to Auckland to host a very special #AdaLovelaceDay2024 live-stream and NZ panel event in partnership with our friends NDY.
We joined the start of the official Ada Lovelace Day Live! from London with a breakfast watch party and got a shout-out from London Eurovision style which was super exciting (see 29:29 on the clip below).
At 08:15 NZDT we switched over to our NZ panel and were thrilled to have an amazing homegrown group of women in STEM, ably guided by STEM Wana’s long time friend Janet Van Jenkins.
We heard from super Shalini Guleria, who shared with us her three loves and the lightbulb moment that allowed her to start the school based Science Box initiative. Inspiring Renee Young asked us to challenge the status quo and to reflect on our north star. The remarkable Annie Vella gave us a quick dive into quantum computing and made a very complex subject understandable, as well as sharing her experience in software engineering and what it means to be a great leader. Last, but not least, was the energetic Hinke Osinga, Professor of Applied Mathematics by day and crafter and media star by night, sharing her story of creating the formula, designing, and making the incredible Lornez Manifold in crochet.
We were thrilled to see such a great turn out from professionals to students to allies, with several dads bringing their daughters to the event. We hope that by giving these wonderful STEM role models a platform to share their work and passions, it will help inspire the next generation as well as let the women currently in STEM know that they are seen AND heard. Ada Lovelace Day is all about being #StrongerTogether and being brave and bold enough to #CreateWhatYouWishExisted.
